Congratulations! If you’ve been contacted for a phone or virtual pre-interview after sending in your resume or CV, you have graduated from the “all-responders” pile to the “we’re curious” pile. Your written materials were intriguing enough for a closer look. This pre-interview step isn’t just a formality; it’s your first chance to show them who you are beyond the resume, so get ready to make an impression.

The Purpose Behind the Pre-Interview

This is a mini interview designed to clarify, validate, and assess. Perhaps your resume caught their eye, but they need more details, confirm a few items that were not clear or they want to gauge your interpersonal style. If you’re an internal candidate, it might simply be protocol. Often, the pre-interview is done by a Human Resources staff member or a recruiter screening on behalf of the Technical Team, which includes final decision-makers.

Regardless, you’re now in a live interaction. You’re not just a list of qualifications; you’re a voice with personality. This first contact tests how you handle initial communication—an essential aspect of any job. So, as you prepare, remind yourself that you are evaluating them as much as they are evaluating you. The job market is a two-way street.

Making an Impression:

The Art of Curiosity and Confidence

In the pre-interview, authenticity and interpersonal competence are your greatest assets. They’re not just assessing skills—they’re getting a feel for the “human” side of you. Do you sound engaged? Are you friendly, polished, and easy to communicate with? Here’s where two qualities can set you apart: curiosity and confidence.

CURIOSITY

Curiosity shows a genuine interest in them and the role. Have a few thoughtful questions ready—ones that reflect your eagerness to understand their culture, team dynamics, or project challenges. A good question might be, “What do you think are the most valuable skills for someone to succeed in this role?” It’s both flattering and insightful, showing that you’re not just interested in “a “ job but “this” job.

CONFIDENCE

Confidence is impactful when balanced with self-awareness and humility. Remember, confidence isn’t arrogance; it’s about showing you believe in your capabilities without overstating them. Avoid overly grand phrases. I can’t tell you how often I heard “transformational leader” in interviews. These concepts sound hollow if not substantiated. Instead, try a concise, grounded description: “I’m highly motivated by new challenges and keen to bring my organizational skills to a collaborative team like yours.”

Pro-Tips to Shine

Speak with a Smile:

It sounds weird,  but speaking with a smile, even if they can’t see you, adds warmth to your tone. Even on the phone, it can make you sound approachable and enthusiastic.

Ask Questions

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. It’s too early to ask about compensation packages, but asking questions, especially about the next steps in the process, shows engagement.

Wrap with Gratitude:

Follow up with a thank-you email mentioning any highlights from your conversation. Mentioning something specific they shared that you appreciated is a nice touch and reinforces your attentiveness.

Remember, you’ve overcome a significant obstacle and are one step closer to the role. Now, it’s time to express your curiosity and confidence. Happy pre-interviewing!
