Global Health Professionals need their Tribe now more than ever. Oops, I meant Professional Network

One of the most transformative areas I focus on as a career coach is helping clients develop and nurture their professional networks. This isn’t just a career tip; it’s a career cornerstone. Studies consistently show that nearly 80% of job opportunities arise from word-of-mouth connections rather than cold applications. Essentially, it’s not just what you know but who you know and how you engage with them.

In chaotic and uncertain times, I encourage people to reframe their professional network as their “tribe.” Think of it as your circle of colleagues, allies, and friends who uplift and support you—and whom you can uplift in return. One of the things I’ve always admired about the global health community is how deeply connected and collaborative it is. Over 20 years of supporting USAID staff, I’ve seen professionals persevere through challenging conditions, demanding leadership, and relentless jet lag. Why? Because of the strength of their team and the sense of shared purpose.
This spirit of collaboration reminds us of what our networks should represent: a tribe of people who inspire and support each other. During crises, we can use this tribal mindset to foster more profound, meaningful connections. Put yourself out there—not simply seeking help but as someone willing to share knowledge, insights, and introductions. You might be the link that leads someone else to their next opportunity.
It’s time to stop viewing networking as transactional or opportunistic and approach it

with authenticity, curiosity, and a spirit of mutual benefit. The best professional relationships are built on trust and genuine care. When you feel supported, understood, and respected—and when you offer that same support to others—you create a lasting connection that transcends job titles or industries.
Your network is a powerful resource that touches every facet of your career: your brand, mentorship opportunities, referrals, references, and a sense of community among like-minded professionals.
Here’s how to nurture it:
Define Your Goals
Be mindful and intentional about why you are networking. Are you seeking mentorship, exploring a new industry, or expanding your knowledge? Having clear goals helps guide your interactions.

Build Genuine Relationships
Approach every interaction with curiosity and mutual benefit. Networking isn’t a one-time event—it’s an ongoing process. Stay in touch, check in regularly, and show a genuine interest in the people you meet.
Explore Internal and External Opportunities
Look for ways to connect both within your organization and beyond. Join industry groups, attend conferences, or engage with online platforms like LinkedIn to expand your reach..
Offer Value Before Asking for Help

Networking isn’t just about seeking favors; it’s about giving. Share industry insights, make introductions, or offer recommendations. The more you give, the more trust you build—and the more goodwill you’ll receive.
Be Generous and Genuine
People remember kindness and authenticity. Show your willingness to help others without expecting immediate returns. Whether sharing knowledge or supporting, generosity will enhance your reputation and foster deeper connections.
When you lead with authenticity, you’ll find that the more you give, the more you receive in unexpected ways. By approaching networking as an act of generosity rather than self-interest, you create a ripple effect of opportunities for yourself and others.
So, as you reflect on your own “tribe,” ask yourself:
How can you add value to someone else’s professional journey today?
The connections you nurture now may be the ones that transform your future.
