Global Health Professionals pivoting to a New Industry — The Smart Way

The global health field is going through a major shake-up. Thousands of professionals are suddenly out of work, and while the industry will rebuild, it may look very different. If you're considering a career pivot, don’t just focus on what you’re leaving behind—get crystal clear on what you’re moving toward.
As a global health career coach, I’ve helped professionals successfully transition into global health from domestically-focused work so now I want to help do that in reverse. Whether you're coming from academia, the implementation project world, or research or even a completely different field, I know how to help you identify transferable skills, learn the language of your new industry, and position yourself as a strong candidate.
Switching industries requires strategy, confidence, and the right game plan. Here’s how you can make your career pivot work:
Start with a Self-Assessment

✅ Ask yourself why you want to switch industries. (Better salary? Alignment with your values? Work-life balance? I need a job!!!). It matters if you create some authentic positive push towards the new. In a previous Info Blast I talked about the “Business of One” mentality. When you operate from this mindset you have the big picture in mind, including perhaps a return to GH when the dust settles, with valuable skills and a new perspective.
✅ Take stock of your transferable skills that you think might apply to your new field. Eventually, when you know more, work through your resume and CV from a different domestic or sector viewpoint. For example, Harvard Business Review published an article last year promoting the concept that global business was moving towards a project management model as a core business approach. Global Health professionals tend to master this approach to getting things done because project management is a core GH business approach.
✅ If needed, identify any gaps—additional certifications or training might give you an edge.
Reality Check: The global health industry will stabilize, but it won't look the same. If pivoting is an option, I'll help you define your value in a way that makes hiring managers take notice
Research your Target Industry (Hurray for the Internet)
✅ Learn the industry’s trends, language, and business model.
✅ Follow thought leaders, read blogs, and engagein online communities.
✅ Pinpoint companies and roles that align with your interests and expertise.
Pro Tip: If you don't know how to translate your current experience into your chosen new sector, we can work on that together.
Leverage Your Tranferable Skills
✅ Your leadership, problem-solving, project management, and alliance-building skills are valuable. Your research experience is top-notch.
✅ Frame your experience strategically so hiring managers see how you fit in.
✅ If necessary, invest in skill-building through short courses or certifications.
Build a strategic Network
✅ Connect with industry professionals via LinkedIn, events, and informational interviews.
✅ Join associations, groups, and professional networks in your target field.
✅ Find a mentor who has transitioned themselves and who will understand the process.
It's not just about who you know-it's about how you engage. I'll teach you effective networking strategies that get you noticed.
Gain Experience in Your Target Field

✅ Freelance, volunteer, or take on short-term projects to gain relevant experience.
✅ If you’re still employed, find cross-functional projects that align with your new career path.
✅ Explore internships, consulting, or contract work to build credibility.
Update Your Resume
✅ Tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight your relevant experience.
✅ Optimize your LinkedIn profile with keywords from your target industry.
✅ Start sharing insights, articles, and posts that position you as a strong candidate.
I don't just tweak resumes-I help my clients craft compelling personal brands that attract recruiters. My job is to follow the research and bring you the evidence-based best practices in career planning. Want a strong LinkedIn presence? Let's build one.
Be Open to Strategic Career Moves
✅ A direct switch into a senior role isn’t always possible. Sometimes you need to zig-zag before you climb higher.
✅ Be open to mid-level or adjacent roles that will help you break into the industry.
✅ Negotiate smartly—sometimes taking a step back now means a bigger leap forward later.
One of my favorite things is teaching clients how to negotiate using the "CEO-of-Your Last Name, Inc" approach. I'll make sure you're ready to land a role that fits your goals.
Crush Your Interviews

✅ Be prepared to tell your career pivot story in a way that excites hiring managers.
✅ Show your enthusiasm, adaptability, and relevant skills.
✅ Practice with me so you walk into your next interview confident and ready to impress.
The way you tell your story can make or break your chances. Let's make sure you have a strong, polished narrative.
Stay Persistent & Flexible
✅ Career transitions take time—but with the right strategy, they happen faster.
✅ Keep refining your skills, expanding your network, and seizing opportunities.
✅ Stay open to unexpected pathways—sometimes the best career moves come from places you didn’t expect.
Above all, take care of your heart and your energy, and manage your thinking. These are scary, unpredictable times. But you've got this!
